Student Contribution/Summer Earnings

In addition to student employment (work study) during the academic year, students are expected to work over the summer to help contribute to college expenses.  Duke has minimum expected contributions from summer earnings based on your year in school.  Your individual student contribution may be higher based on your income and/or assets.

Summer Earnings Grant Replacement

If you participate in summer activities that are part of your Duke curriculum (including Duke Engage and Duke Global Education programs), part or all of your student contribution may be reduced and replaced with additional grant funds during the following academic year.  The amount of summer earnings grant replacement awarded depends on the length of your summer enrollment as well as your federal need (based on the FAFSA).  This will be awarded automatically to all those who are eligible; no application or notice is required.  Find out more.

New Duke Personal Finance Website Launched!

Duke University has a new website!  Personal Finance@Duke

This website is designed to empower Duke students and alumni to make informed financial decisions by providing them with financial management knowledge and skills necessary to navigate life events that affect everyday financial decisions, discuss issues surrounding personal finances, and plan for the future.

In addition to the website launch, Personal Finance@Duke is also offering workshops on the following topics:

April 9        Build Your Own Budget (Budgeting)

April 11      Grab that Cash and Make a Stash (Saving)

April 16      Credit – Friend or Foe (Credit Score/Credit Report)

April 17      Cover Your Assets (Insurance)

April 24      Show Me the Money and Benefits (Salary Negotiations)

Visit us at www.personalfinance.duke.edu for more information.  To sign up for any of the workshops, please click here.

Summer Work Study at Duke

If you are enrolled in classes on Duke's campus during a summer term, your initial need-based financial aid package will include a work study award.  Work study for summer works the same way as it does for the academic year, except the award amount is smaller because the summer term earning period is shorter.

Please Note: Due to federal budgetary shifts, work study will not be available for non-enrolled students during the summer terms.

Upcoming deadlines/reminders

Renewal financial aid applications
Renewal financial aid applications are due May 1, 2012.  You've only got a few weeks left, so be sure to check your ACES To-Do List!  If you miss the deadline, your eligibility won't change but your financial aid might not show up on your first bill.  Learn more about late applications.

Summer Financial Aid
The Financial Aid Office will continue processing preliminary summer financial aid awards through April.  These awards will be finalized at the end of the drop/add period each summer term, and you will receive notification of any changes made to your award.  Click here for more information about the determination of summer financial aid awards.
